Who
Should Attend
The programme will be particularly useful for people involved in
occupational health and safety especially those involved in idustrial
and construction applications, product and facility designers, safety
representatives, ergonomists, physio and occupational therapists.
It will also be of interest to professionals from trade unions,
human resources and employer's organisations who want to learn more
about the role of ergonomics in the prevention and management of
workplace injuries.
This conference will be followed by practical workshop sessions,
which will take place around the country. The topics for the workshops
will be decided after the conference based on participant interest.
Fee
The fee for the one day conference including, proceedings, lunch
and tea/coffee is IR£130.00.
Venue
The Conference will take place in the Dublin Castle Conference Centre,
which is located in the city centre. Pedestrian access to the Conference

Accommodation
There are many hotels within walking distance of Dublin Castle -
Jury's Christchurch Inn is the nearest. Reservations should also
be made directly with the hotel.

for delegates. There are however, a number of public car parks in
the vicinity of the Dublin Castle Conference Centre should you require
same.
Exhibition
Delegates will be able to visit an on-site exhibition relevent to

Keynote
Speakers
Mr.
Illka Kourinka, M.D., Ph.D
After graduating in medicine in 1967, Mr. Kuorinka worked as a general
practitioner, joining the Ergonomics Unit of the Institute of Occupational
Health in Helsinki,Finland in 1968.He completed his doctoral thesis
in 1976 on fatigue and EMG (electromyography) during repetitive
movements. His research interest areas focussed on repetitive tasks
Ð both the mechanics of movement and the relationship to injury
Ð in an ergonomic context. In 1989, he moved to Montreal,Canada
with the L'Institut de recherche en sante et en securite du travail. He
was initially a researcher with this body and then became programme
director with the Programme Securite-Ergonomie. Since 1997, he has
been an international lecturer and consultant in Ergonomics. Mr
Kuorinka is the former president and fellow of the International
Ergonomics Association (IEA) and the recepient of both the "Grand
Prix" of the Nordic Ergonomics Society and "Distinguished
Foreign Colleague Award", Human Factors Society.
Dr. Stuart McGill,Ph.D
Stuart McGill is a spinal biomechanist and Professor in the Department
of Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, Canada where he has
a laboratory that explores low back mechanics of both intact humans
(both normal and injured people) and harvested tissues (where specific
injuries are created and analysed-mostly pig spines). He is the
author of many scientific journal papers that address the issues
of lumbar function, low back injurymechanisms, investigation of
tissue loading during rehabilitation programs, and the formulation
of work-related injury avoidance strategies. This work has received
several awards including the "Volvo Bioengineering Award for
Low Back Pain Research" in 1986. As a consultant to industry,
he has provided expertise on assessment and reduction of the risk
of low back injury to various government agencies, several corporations
and several legal f i r m s . He curre n t ly holds an NSERC re
s e a rch operating grant entitled "Tow a rd s Understanding
Low Back Injury From Repeated and Prolonged Loads", together
with funding from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and
is the President of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics for 1999-2000
and an elected member of the executive for the International Society
for Biomechanics 1999-2001. He is married, has two children, and
lives in Waterloo, Ontario.
