Who
We Are
Ergo is composed of a core of a number of highly
qualified consultants, support personnel and a network of associates
and associate firms who supply ancillary expertise in mechanical
engineering, fire engineering, environmental and ecological sciences,
etc. We also have a very close association with the Centre for Air
Quality and the Centre for Occupational Safety and Ergonomics, both
of the National University of Ireland, Galway.
We have particular
expertise in the area of ergonomics, specialising in the prevention
of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs), the ergonomic design of hand
tools, VDU workstation ergonomics and human factors in design.
What
is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics developed
as a recognised discipline during the second world war. The collaboration
of various scientists (including psychologists, physiologists, medical
doctors and engineers) recognised how the efficiency of complex
military equipment i.e. aircraft, could be compromised by poor or
confusing design. This lead to design concepts of fitting the machine
to the size and capabilities of the soldier. The results of this
interdisciplinary approach were very promising and it was developed
after the war to look at occupational factors including worker safety,
work tasks and organisation, the working environment and the usability
of machines and equipment.
So what we have
arrived at today is a field of practical and scientific study of
people in relation to their working environment, which aims to optimise;
- health and safety
- comfort and ease of use
- efficiency and productivity
These goals
are the essence of a 'good job'
The benefits
of applying good ergonomics not only benefits people (leading to
the reduction and/or elimination of injury) but as a result of that
intervention improves the way organisations work leading to improvements
in quality and productivity, which benefits society as a whole.
